Among various indigenous traditions, the Oracle is still alive and well!
In November 2016, I had the privilege of being in the presence of the Medium of the State Oracle of Tibet, the Venerable Thupten Ngodup, fondly known as Kuten-La. I heard him give two talks in the San Franciscso area on the basic tenets of Buddhism & was able to ask some questions on how he serves as an oracle.
In the Tibetan tradition, the oracle is considered to be the SPIRIT that enters into a person who acts as a MEDIUM between the natural and spiritual realms.
The Dalai Lama writes in his autobiography: “For hundreds of years now, it has been traditional for the Dalai Lama, and the government, to consult the Oracle spirit during the New Year’s festival and other times. I myself have dealings with him several times a year.
“This may sound far-fetched to 20th Century Western readers. Even some Tibetans, mostly those who consider themselves progressive, have misgivings about my continued use of this ancient method of intelligence gathering. But I do so for the simple reason that as I look back over many occasions when I have asked questions of the Oracle, on each one of them time has proved his answer was correct.”
I asked Kuten-la several questions regarding what it is that he actually tells the Dalai Lama when he is in a trance.
He said “I don’t tell him what to do. It is more like a mutual discussion with His Holiness. Most questions have to do with the life and the security of His Holiness, and also difficulties or obstacles for the Tibetan people. Information comes through about prayers to remove obstacles for the people, and prayers to remove obstacles to the safe travel of his holiness.”
Seeing the Oracle in Action
Weeks later, I had the opportunity see a video of Kuten-La in a ceremony in which he was possessed by the Spirit of the Oracle, named Nechung. I watched as he moved his head wearing a 50-pound crown as though it were nothing while he was possessed by this being.
The camera then showed him coming into intimate contact with His Holiness, whispering information in his ear. It was breathtaking. (See below for instructions on how to access this video.)
There are also female oracles in Tibet (also visible in the video), and to my mind, the older original practice is really the female practice. Because from my research, it’s clear that the woman’s body is overall more porous to spirit then the man’s body, and this goes for everything from being able to bring in human spirit to being able to bring in a divine spirit.
