About This Sacred Ceremony

The ancient Mayans used Cacao ceremonially for thousands of years to support their relationships, communities & culture, and this ceremonial knowledge has been made available to the modern world by teachers from those lineages.
Our online Mama Cacao ceremony honors the lineage of the late Paola I’x and her loving partner Gustavo Ik of Mexico, in particular, and their Mayan ancestors.
Is Cacao Right for You?
Most people find Cacao to be a safe & beneficial ceremonial food.
It is NOT a hallucinogen & is far gentler even than cannabis. It will not make you feel out of control, paranoid, overwhelmed, or fearful, nor will it lead you to experience any of the other challenges that can go along with stronger plant allies or synthetic drugs.
Cacao DOES raise your heart rate and lower your blood pressure.
Therefore, if you have a heart condition such that a 20 percent increase in your heart rate would cause a medical emergency for your body, you are advised not to ingest Cacao during this ceremony.
Also, while most people who take anti-depressants have no trouble with a full, ceremonial quantity of Cacao (one ounce or 29 grams), please read HERE and HERE for more information on how MAOI-based anti-depressants can sometimes interact with cacao for some people. It is recommended that those taking MAOI-based anti-depressants start with a quarter or half dose (a quarter or half ounce). When in doubt, contact your doctor.
You will find more about what’s in Cacao HERE. Note that there is very little caffeine in raw ceremonial cacao (see HERE for a trusted sourced on that). The theobromine in Cacao stimulates the cardiovascular system rather than the nervous system (in contrast to caffeine).
Please note that you can still participate in the ceremony by taking less than a ceremonial dose – or none at all – and still receive the benefit of this plant ally energetically. There are numerous stories attesting to the power of Mama Cacao to touch people’s spirits even if she is not taken into the body.
