In April 2017 I wrote a blog post on the Chinese and Taiwanese Goddess Ma-tsu, which I have rewritten and updated below, as there could be no more important time than now to bring attention to this important goddess of PROTECTION. I offer this post with an invitation for us to call upon her to calm the escalating events between China and Taiwan.
THIS GODDESS IS POWERFUL. Not only do I know this personally (see my story below), but there are many stories of her intervening to help humans. One stands out as particularly relevant for the current political crisis. According to reports from witnesses in Taiwan, where Ma-tsu migrated & became a chief deity, one day during WW2 she appeared as an enormous figure in the sky to catch bombs from US planes before they landed on the ground.
This is a goddess who helps reverse warfare, so her gifts are particularly relevant at this moment, as the world stands on a potential precipice.
Who Is Ma-tsu?
Among the stories of divine birth on earth, few tell of the arrival of a FEMALE child.
Mary’s is one such (born divinely of Anne) but, guess what, there’s another one who’s accessible in not only in Taiwan, but also in the heart of San Francisco.
This is the great Ma-tsu.
She was born a human woman in 960 AD (though, by some accounts much earlier, in the 8th century) in China after her mother dreamt that the goddess of compassion Quan Yin gave her a pill. Rather than being born in the conventional way, Mat-su shot from her mother at birth in the form of a fragrant flash of red light.
These stories indicate what we’re talking about here is the divine conception of a female avatar, the incarnation of the Goddess into human form. It is thought that Ma-tsu was an incarnation of Quan Yin, in particular.
True to what I’ve discovered about the avatar-like nature of divinely born children, which I write about in my books The Mystery Tradition of Miraculous Conception, The Cult of Divine Birth in Ancient Greece & Virgin Mother Goddesses of Antiquity, this child, originally named Moniang Lin, indeed had tremendous spiritual & healing powers.
In a book of the Taoist Cannon, Mat-su is the incarnation of another Divine Female: Jade Woman of Marvelous Deeds. According to this story, Jade Woman/Mat-su is considered a “star” from the Big Dipper, brought to earth by the divine form of Lao Tsu, the great Chinese philosopher and writer, to show his compassion for those who might be lost at sea.
Thus Ma-tsu was a Star Seed who was very much ahead of her time!
She was a highly advanced child, able to master complex religious texts and concepts, and by 13, she had gained the abilities to see the future and visit places in spirit without travel. She was able to manifest herself at a distance as well and used this power to visit gardens in the surrounding countryside.
Ma-tsu was said to have stood on the shore in red garments to guide fishing boats home, regardless of harsh or dangerous weather. At 16, she saved members of her family when they were caught offshore during a typhoon. Also at 16, she received an amulet or two bronze tablets, which she translated or used to exorcize demons, to heal the sick, and to avert disasters. She was also said to be a rainmaker during times of drought.
This great being’s popular name, Ma-tsu, touchingly means “grandmother of your great-grandmother,” pointing to the matriarchal nature of the people from whom she emerged. Thus she incorporates Feminine Matriarchal Wisdom. I also call this Lemurian wisdom.
At age 27, in 987 AD, Ma-tsu announced that she had achieved divine status, and, true to the divine birth schema I’ve uncovered in my research, she left her body & ascended. She thereby became a goddess who’d often save others from danger.
Ma-tsu swears not only to protect sailors but to oversee all facets of life and death, providing help to anyone who might call upon her.
Ma-tsu was installed as a goddess in Chinatown in San Francisco in 1986, and her statues in triplicate currently reside in her temple at 30 Beckett Street in San Francisco. One or more of these statues is energetically “renewed” with her indwelling spirit by being brought back to the mother temple in Taiwan from time to time.
Powerful Personal Messages from Ma-tsu
I’ve been in Ma-tsu’s presence in her temple 4 times now, and each time I’ve received a direct & powerful message of guidance to the different ponderous personal issues I’ve brought before her. Her communications have been so immediate, clear & unexpected, filled with simple but high-level guidance, that I know they haven’t come just from my own mind. They’ve brought me to tears each time – a sign of their divine power.
In other words, this goddess is REAL & she is PRESENT.
A Priestess Visit to Ma-tsu
In April 2017, I took several women on a field trip to visit her.
Some of us explored getting answers through her “divination crescents,” wooden implements the shape of croissants (an old lunar female symbol) that you can throw to determine yes or no answers to your questions.
I chose to sit in front of one of her guardians, known as the “generals,” to receive messages through meditation:

Toward the end of our visit, we gathered in a circle in the temple to share the messages we had gotten from her together. Her messages about cosmic & earthly matters are still relevant relevant to all who listen in these dense times.

Again, Ma-tsu is an ascended master goddess who carries the compassionate energies of Quan Yin and the wisdom of Jade Woman.
She answers all calls of people in need.
It seems that the relations between Taiwan and China are in great need of calming. I invite you to call upon Ma-tsu to effect her great power in this situation, to bring the compassion and wisdom of the Feminine to prevail in this escalating crisis with world-wide implications.
Tune into Ma-tsu through her images. Perhaps print one out and light a candle. Your prayer might be: Ma-tsu, please calm the seas, open the hearts, advance the minds of all decision-makers in this situation. Please bring everyone involved to wise solutions based in love and compassion. This or better, for the greatest good of all.
