Hand-knit in Ireland, using Irish wool, sourced sustainable from Irish farmers working with select sheep breeds.

Zoë Daly, co-founder of Ériu and a true modern-day priestess, shares her love of the traditions of Ireland through her beautiful shop. Sourced only from Irish farmers working with select sheep breeds, lovingly handcrafted in Ireland with attention to ancient practices, her team creates beautiful blankets and accessories.

Marguerite’s Glowing Endorsement…

“There’s something magical about wool and the garments that can be made of them, and the Ériu blankets represent the pinnacle of that magic. I have two, one for my couch and one for my bed, and I simply LOVE them. I sleep with one of them covering me each night, and I drape the other around me when the house is a bit chilly, or when I’m reading, contemplating, or watching a video.

“Part of the magic, for me, lies in the ability of the blankets to offer just the right amount of warmth, and no more. This was even the case in the summer, when I was sick with a cold. The air was warm but my feet were cool, and the blanket still managed to provide the right temperature for my body.

“What’s perhaps most magical, for me, is the energy I feel from the blankets, which surely is a combination of the loving intentions of proprietors Zoë Daly and Lionel Mackey, the contentment of the special sheep, who reside in Ireland and are treated well, and the delight of the sheep farmers, who are being well-paid for their heirloom varieties. A truly enchanted win-win-win!

“As a result of all this, the Ériu blankets feel soft and comforting. I love that they are dyed with natural colors and that they never pill. They truly add a positive dimension to my life that I am grateful for, especially as the days get colder and the nights longer!” Marguerite Rigoglioso, Ph.D., founding director of Seven Sisters Mystery School

A note from Zoë…

“I always want our transparent process to satisfy conscious shoppers. We have a page related to each step of the process in terms of sustainability on our website which we encourage you to explore, but I was not specific in why those wools were chosen.

Basically it has been over 7 years of research my end investigating the right breed and percentage of blend to go into the perfect blanket.

The two breeds we use, Romney and Blue Face Leicester, are chosen as they work really well together in a blend to provide softness and lustre ( the Blue Face mainly) and then the Romney gives it durability and strength. You will also notice these fibres don’t pill ( does not create little balls the way other natural fibres can) and are not itchy. The way the fibres work together combined with our knitted stitch also creates a beautiful drape ( are not stiff) when worn which is elegant and cosy.

We raise both these breeds on our farm in Co Wicklow and work with select farmers across the land to hand source from.

There are not many of these select breeds being raised in Ireland due to the wool being devalued for so long now; however, we are hoping to change that.

Our signature knitted stitch is the Honeycomb stitch which represents a sense of community. Just like a community of honeybees, Ériu replicates this via our network of farmers, artisans and industry experts all working together to bring equal value and passion to our process which we call Farm to Yarn.

Until our own Mill is operational next year we spin our wool with Donegal Yarns in the beautiful wild hills of Donegal in the West of Ireland. They have been spinning wool for generations and have a very sustainable and eco friendly process. We have chosen our initial colours; Rosebud, SeaSong, and Honeybee ( and soon releasing a natural undyed colour) to be a reflection of the Irish landscape, from the wild roses seen in the countryside, the the way the sea changes colour every day, to the rich tones made from organic Irish honey.

Dying is an organic process made from sustainable dyes which do no harm to the environment in their processing or waste material and yet also hold the colour throughout washing. When we chose a colour we then embark on a journey with the colour expert to see how our blend will absorb it. Sometimes, this is not how we expect it due to the natural colours in the wool which influences the dye however we enjoy how the colour evolves in this way (rather than using bleaches to force dye a Pantone) we always end up with a beautiful tone through this journey!”
